What Is the Default Mode Network?

The Default Mode Network (DMN) is a network of brain regions that activates when our minds are at rest — when we're daydreaming, reflecting, or imagining. Instead of focusing on external tasks, the DMN turns inward, supporting self-reflection, creativity, and emotional processing.
Research shows that a healthy DMN is important for maintaining mental balance, reducing stress, and enhancing our ability to think abstractly. Overactivity or dysfunction in this network has been linked to anxiety, depression, and other mental health challenges.
My abstract line art is inspired by the idea of gently engaging the DMN. When viewers explore the flowing lines and layered shapes, they’re invited to drift, imagine, and reflect — activities that can calm the mind and support well-being.
Studies using brain imaging (such as fMRI) have shown that looking at art, especially abstract works, can activate the DMN and encourage a meditative state. This connection between art and neuroscience is what drives my work forward.
By creating pieces that interact with this network, I hope to offer more than just visual interest — I aim to create spaces that promote healing, curiosity, and meaningful conversation.
